When Miyazaki Hayao announced in 2013 that The Wind Rises would be his last animated film for Studio Ghibli, fans worldwide mourned the retirement of the prolific director. Now, the legend himself is coming out of retirement to make How Do You Live, a feature-length animated film set to hit theatres in Japan on 14th July 2023.

A key visual for the animated film How Do You Live was released today, alongside official announcements that the upcoming Studio Ghibli film will be released on 14th July 2023.
According to Yahoo Japan, Miyazaki will be producing and directing, as well as writing the script for the new animated feature. The visual poster was also drawn by the man of the hour.

This is Miyazaki’s 1st film since The Wind Rises was released in 2013. While Ghibli fans were left devastated by the news of his retirement, they had a ray of hope – the prolific director announced in 2017 that he was coming back to direct 1 final film, and has been working on How Do You Live ever since.

Inspired by the 1937 Japanese novel of the same title, How Do You Live is Miyazaki’s original take on the coming-of-age story. Hailed as a classic for young readers in Japan, the novel follows a 15-year-old boy as he encounters experiences that compel him to think about the importance of morals, art, science, philosophy, and beyond.
The film is said to deviate from the original novel, incorporating fantasy elements instead.
There are no updates on the film’s international release date for now. But with 2023 fast approaching and given Studio Ghibli’s worldwide popularity, it shouldn’t be long before fans everywhere can witness Miyazaki’s genius on the big screen again.
