Despite its lack of zest for life, Gudetama will be starring in a full-fledged Netflix show. The streaming platform is cooking up a live-action film for Sanrio’s famously lethargic egg yolk, who will serve us lots of laughter come 13th December.

Netflix’s first teaser was a 40-second clip of Gudetama’s 3D form lying on its stomach. Gudetama heaves out its signature phrase, “Dari”, which means “I feel lazy”.

Compared to the cryptic video, the latest teaser released on 25th September shows us a lot more of Gudetama: An Eggcellent Adventure.
The action-packed reel features Gudetama with a newly hatched chick, Shakipiyo. Fresh out of her shell, she’s filled with an eagerness that Gudetama does not share.
Gudetama wants to chicken out of all activity but is too unmotivated to resist Shakipiyo’s energy.

“We’re siblings, right? Let’s go find Momma,” Shakipiyo exclaims, ready to explore the world. Gudetama gets pushed along – literally – despite its reluctance.

Walking on eggshells, the pair face perils such as busy trains and hungry customers that chase after them. Then the biggest challenge appears: Gudetama appears to be reaching its expiration date, and nobody knows what happens to an expired egg.
Will Gudetama and Shakipiyo find their parents, or will the egg go bad before the mission is completed?

Since its release in 2013, Gudetama has become a cultural icon in Japan. There is something oddly charming about its apathetic personality that resonates with the lazy soul in us.

Paired with quotable quotes and a poke-able butt, Gudetama has its own kind of kawaii that sets it apart from the rest of Sanrio’s roster.
Gudetama has numerous 2D adaptations. Its first animated series aired on TV from 2014 to 2020. And in January 2021, Sanrio launched a new YouTube series titled Gudetama Freestyle.

Gudetama drops iconic lines while interacting unwillingly with other characters, including its humanoid counterpart, Nisetama.
While waiting for the Netflix adaptation, check out the first episode of Gudetama Freestyle, which supposedly reveals the birth of Gudetama.

Gudetama: An Eggcellent Adventure will crack on 13th December, in time for families to enjoy over Christmas. The trailer leaves us with many questions, but one thing’s for sure – the show will be an eggcellent adventure. Well, at least for Shakipiyo.
